The owners of this 18^th Avenue South home envisioned a comprehensive renovation of their backyard that centered around transforming their existing detached garage into a functional and inviting gym and bar area, while also reimagining their backyard to create a seamless indoor-outdoor experience.

The garage underwent a full exterior upgrade, with the existing siding, entry door, and garage door removed and replaced with new plywood sheathing and wood siding designed to match the main house. We insulated the garage with spray foam and made it climate-controlled by using a new ductless mini-split HVAC system, with the condenser discreetly located behind the garage.

We divided the garage into a gym area outfitted with custom-fit gym mat flooring and a bar area that opens to the backyard via a large new window featuring a stone countertop and an awning-style mechanism. The bar design included custom cabinetry, a sink, two beverage centers, an ice maker, and a kegerator.

Due to the existing topography, we constructed a retaining wall system around the perimeter to create a level yard and raised planting beds. From the house, a gravel and stepping stone path was installed to lead to a bluestone patio near the bar and hot tub area. The remainder of the yard includes a combination of artificial turf, gravel, and additional bluestone patio. A 20-foot by 20-foot pergola was added to provide architectural interest and partial shade, with a canvas sunshade installed beneath a portion of the structure to offer protection from the sun. Additionally, this project included the installation of a cold plunge tub, outdoor shower, and sauna.

Merrill Construction Group had done a fireplace and a kitchen redo for my neighbor, who was very happy with the job. I felt Mr. Merrill was neat and professional, always took and returned my calls on time and had some good ideas for my fireplace so I accepted his bid to perform the job. It is beautiful and took less than a week start to finish.
